Having an internet connection at home is no longer a luxury. Even those who live in rural areas without fixed line broadband internet are looking for internet options. One such option is satellite broadband which establishes a data connection between two locations. A satellite equipment is placed in one location – in most cases at the customer. This equipment allows data to travel to a NOC or HUB teleport which furthers routes the data traffic to the Internet.
More specifically, a dish and a communications satellite are used in combination to establish a connection to the internet. The advantages of using satellite broadband are many. First of all, the connection is much faster than dialup connections and it is always up. Secondly, satellite broadband is available anywhere as long as the location has a clear view of the northern and southern sky. The speed of this type of broadband is much faster than normal broadband connections.
The disadvantage of satellite broadband is that it requires special equipment which is expensive. The start-up costs of satellite broadband are a lot due to the high costs of the special satellite equipment that is needed. (more...)
